The basics

What is a single tooth implant?

A gap from one lost tooth can make you chew on the other side, catch food, or hide your smile in photos. Left alone, the teeth beside it can also lean into the space over time.

A single tooth implant fills that gap with a replacement that is anchored in the jaw. A titanium post is placed where the root used to be, the bone bonds to it, and a custom crown is attached on top. Unlike a conventional bridge, nothing is cut back or crowned on the healthy teeth next door.

Kallangur Dental Surgery places single tooth implants for patients across Kallangur, North Lakes, Murrumba Downs, Petrie and the Moreton Bay region, with planning and placement led by Dr Zaheer Kadwa.

The parts

Implant post, abutment and implant crown

Each single tooth implant is built from three pieces that work together.

  • The post. A small titanium screw that sits in the jawbone. Bone grows onto its surface, a process called osseointegration, so it becomes a firm artificial root.
  • The abutment. A connector that rises just above the gum and holds the crown at the right angle and height.
  • The implant crown. The part you see, made from ceramic and matched to the colour, size and shape of your own teeth so it blends in when you smile and bites evenly when you chew.

Longevity

How long does a single tooth implant last?

Once bonded, the post is designed to stay in the bone for decades, and plenty of people keep theirs for life. Titanium does not decay the way a natural tooth can. The crown takes the everyday wear of chewing, so after many years it may need to be renewed while the post stays where it is.

What shortens an implant's life is usually gum infection around it, so cleaning well at home and coming in for regular check-ups matter. Smoking also slows healing and weakens the bone and gum, so we ask patients to stop, at least around treatment.

Timeline

How long does a single implant take from start to finish?

Allow roughly three to six months for most single tooth implants. Very little of that is time in the chair: one visit to place the post, then short visits for the abutment and the crown. The rest is the bone quietly bonding to the implant.

If the damaged tooth still needs to come out, it is removed first. In suitable cases the implant can go in at the same appointment, which shortens the overall wait. Your written plan lists each step and its timing, so you know what you are signing up for.

How it works

Replacing one tooth with an implant, step by step

Because an implant replaces the root as well as the visible tooth, it needs no support from the teeth around it. These are the four stages, and most of the time between them is healing.

01

Scan and plan

At the free consultation we photograph the gap, take an OPG X-ray and, where needed, a 3D cone-beam scan to check the bone. Dr Kadwa maps the implant position and you receive a written plan and quote.

02

Implant placement

The post is placed under local anaesthetic, and sedation can be arranged if you feel anxious. For one tooth it is usually a shorter appointment than people imagine, and you head home afterwards.

Bonding and abutment

The bone takes around three to six months to grow firmly onto the post. When it is stable, we attach the abutment, the short connector that will hold your crown.

Crown fitted

Your crown is made to the shade and shape of your surrounding teeth, checked against your bite and then fixed in place. From then on you brush and floss it like any other tooth.

Good to know

Single Tooth Implants - frequently asked

How much does a single tooth implant cost?

At Kallangur Dental Surgery a single tooth implant starts from $3,999 for the implant, abutment and crown. Extra steps such as an extraction, bone grafting or sedation add to that where they are needed. You get an itemised written quote after the free consultation, and our implant cost guide explains typical price ranges.

How long does a single implant take from start to finish?

Most cases take three to six months. Placing the post is one appointment, the abutment and crown are two short visits, and the time in between lets the bone bond to the implant. An extraction or a graft can extend the timeline.

Is an implant better than a bridge for one tooth?

For a single gap, an implant is usually the more conservative choice because the teeth beside it are left untouched, whereas a bridge needs them crowned for support. An implant also helps keep the bone under the gap from shrinking. A bridge can be quicker and cheaper upfront, so Dr Kadwa talks through both with you.

Does getting an implant hurt?

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so most patients notice pressure rather than pain. Afterwards you can expect mild soreness and some swelling for a few days, which ordinary pain relief usually handles. Sedation is available for nervous patients.

Will health insurance cover a single implant?

Cover depends on your fund and extras level. Some policies contribute towards parts of the treatment, such as the crown, but not always the implant itself. We are a preferred provider for Medibank, HCF, Bupa and Westfund, claim other funds through HICAPS, and give you an itemised plan to check with your insurer.

Who is a good candidate for a single tooth implant?

Adults with one missing tooth, healthy gums and enough bone in that spot are usually suitable. Your jaw needs to have finished growing, and good general health and oral hygiene help the implant succeed. Smokers are asked to stop around treatment. If bone is thin, a graft can often fix that first.

What is an implant crown made of?

The crown is ceramic, colour-matched and shaped to the teeth around it, and it sits on an abutment attached to a titanium post. Titanium is used because the body accepts it and bone grows firmly onto it.

Can I have an implant straight after an extraction?

Sometimes. If the bone and gum around the old tooth are healthy, the implant may be placed on the same day the tooth is removed. If there is infection or bone loss, we let the site heal first, which is safer for the long-term result.

How do I care for a single implant?

Brush it twice a day and clean between it and its neighbours with floss, an interdental brush or a water flosser. Keep up regular check-ups and cleans so we can check the gum around it stays healthy.
