The basics

What are composite resin veneers?

Composite veneers are thin, custom-shaped layers of tooth-coloured resin placed over the visible part of your front teeth. The resin is durable and safe in the mouth, and your dentist chooses a shade that blends with your natural enamel so the change looks like your own teeth on a good day.

Instead of being made off-site, each composite veneer is sculpted directly onto the tooth. Your dentist adds the material in fine layers, hardens each one with a curing light and polishes the surface to the same sheen as enamel. Because most of your natural tooth is left untouched, the treatment is minimally invasive, and a veneer that chips can usually be repaired rather than replaced.

Composite veneers are ideal for people with healthy teeth and gums who want to improve the shape, length or colour of a few teeth. They can correct chipped edges, gaps between teeth, misshapen teeth, discolouration and areas of enamel erosion. Eating, speaking and the way your bite feels stay the same.

Living with them

How long do composite veneers last?

Most composite veneers last around 5 to 7 years, and many go longer when they are looked after. Resin is softer than porcelain, so its lifespan depends on your habits as much as the material:

  • Brush gently twice daily with a non-abrasive toothpaste
  • Go easy on coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, which stain resin over time
  • Avoid biting ice, pens or fingernails with your front teeth
  • Wear a night guard if you grind or clench
  • Book a check-up and polish every six months so small marks are caught early

When a composite veneer does wear, it can usually be touched up or rebuilt in the chair. Our article on how to look after your composite resin veneers covers daily care and when replacing composite veneers makes sense.

How it works

Can composite veneers be done in one visit? The procedure

In most cases, yes. Composite veneers are shaped on your teeth during one appointment, with a review afterwards to check your bite. Larger cases may be split over two visits.

01

Free smile consultation

Talk us through what you would like to change. Your dentist checks your teeth and gums for decay or gum problems that need care first, and confirms composite veneers can deliver the result you want.

02

Shade matching and surface preparation

Together you choose a resin shade that sits naturally beside your other teeth. The front surface is lightly roughened and conditioned so the resin grips well, usually with little or no drilling.

03

Layering and shaping

Resin is added in thin increments and sculpted by hand to rebuild edges, close small gaps and even out the length of each tooth. Each layer is set with a curing light before the next goes on.

04

Polish and bite check

The finished veneers are refined and polished until they reflect light like enamel. We check how your teeth meet, adjust any high spots and book a review to see how everything has settled.

Your options

Composite vs porcelain veneers and bonding

Composite veneers sit between a small bonding repair and a full porcelain set. Here is how the three compare, so you can weigh cost, time and lifespan before your consultation.

Good to know

Composite Veneers - frequently asked

How much do composite veneers cost?

At Kallangur Dental Surgery, composite veneers are $800 per tooth. The overall figure depends on how many teeth you want treated and whether other work is needed first. You get a written estimate after your free smile consultation, before anything is done.

How long do composite veneers last?

Around 5 to 7 years is typical, and careful patients often get longer. Staining foods, grinding and biting hard objects shorten their life. Because resin can be repolished and patched, a worn veneer can often be refreshed rather than redone. Individual results vary.

Can composite veneers be done in one visit?

Usually, yes. The resin is shaped and set directly on your teeth, so a small to moderate case can be completed in a single appointment. If you are having many teeth treated, we may split the work into two visits to keep each one comfortable.

Composite or porcelain veneers: which should I choose?

Composite costs less, is usually finished in one visit and is easy to repair. Porcelain costs more, resists staining and generally lasts longer. Our porcelain vs composite veneers article sets out the trade-offs, and your dentist can compare them against your own teeth.

How do I look after composite veneers?

Brush twice a day with a soft brush, floss daily and use a non-abrasive toothpaste. Limit coffee, tea and red wine, avoid chewing hard objects and keep up six-monthly check-ups so your dentist can polish away surface marks.

Do composite veneers look like natural teeth?

They are designed to. Your dentist matches the resin to the colour of your teeth and polishes it to the same shine as enamel. Composite veneers feel smooth and natural, and they do not change the way you eat or speak.

What's the difference between dental bonding and composite veneers?

Both use tooth-coloured resin. Dental bonding repairs one area, such as a chipped corner or small gap, while a composite veneer covers the whole front of the tooth to change its colour and shape as well.

Are composite veneers painful?

Most people find them comfortable, as little or no tooth structure is removed and many patients don't need an injection. If you feel nervous about dental visits, let us know when booking and we can talk about support for anxious patients.

Can composite veneers cause an allergic reaction?

Allergy to dental composite is very uncommon. If you have known sensitivities to dental materials, mention them at your consultation so your dentist can review them before treatment.

I've lost some permanent teeth. Can I still have composite veneers?

Veneers cover existing teeth, so they cannot fill a space where a tooth is missing. We can talk about replacing lost teeth with dental implants or a bridge, and then match composite veneers on neighbouring teeth for an even look.

Can I see composite veneers before and after photos?

Yes. Our smile gallery shows real, consented patient cases. Every mouth is different, so individual results vary, and your dentist will explain what is realistic for your teeth.

Can a chipped tooth be repaired quickly?

A fresh chip on a front tooth can often be rebuilt with resin in a single visit. If the break is large, painful or exposes the inside of the tooth, call us on (07) 3886 0933 for an emergency appointment.
