Bone Graft for Dental
Implants Kallangur

Building a firm base for your new teeth

A bone graft for dental implants rebuilds jawbone that has thinned after tooth loss, gum disease or an injury, so an implant has enough solid bone to anchor into. At Kallangur Dental Surgery on Anzac Avenue, grafting is planned as part of your overall implant treatment rather than as a separate hurdle. Many people will not need it at all, and a free implant consultation with an OPG X-ray is the simplest way to find out where you stand.

The basics

What is a dental bone graft?

Once a tooth is lost, the bone that held its root no longer gets the pressure of chewing, and it slowly shrinks in height and width. Over months and years that can leave too little bone for an implant to sit in securely.

A dental bone graft adds material to the thin area. The graft acts as a scaffold that your body gradually fills with its own new bone, restoring enough volume for an implant to be placed in a stable position. Grafting can be done on its own, at the time a tooth is removed, or at the same appointment as the implant, depending on how much bone is missing.

Who needs it

Do I need a bone graft before an implant?

Not always. Plenty of patients have enough healthy bone and go straight to implant placement. A graft is more likely to be suggested if:

  • A tooth has been missing for a long time - bone loss is gradual, so older gaps tend to have less bone
  • Gum disease has affected the jaw - advanced periodontal disease can erode the bone around teeth
  • A tooth was lost to injury or infection - trauma and abscesses can leave a defect in the bone
  • You wore a denture for years - pressure from a plate can speed up shrinkage of the ridge

Our implant dentist reviews your X-ray and explains what your bone looks like, what grafting would involve and whether an approach like All-On-4® could reduce the need for it. As with any surgery, outcomes vary between individuals, and we talk through what to expect before you decide. You can read more about the wider process on our dental implants in Kallangur page.

How it works

How a dental bone graft works

Grafting techniques differ depending on where the bone is needed and how much. This is the general sequence our Kallangur patients can expect.

01

Free consultation and graft assessment

We examine your mouth and take an OPG X-ray to measure the bone where your implant would go. If a graft is needed, we explain the type of graft material that suits your case and how it fits into your overall implant plan. You receive a written estimate, and this first appointment costs nothing.

02

Placing the graft

The graft is placed under local anaesthetic. A small opening in the gum gives access to the thin area of bone, the graft material is packed into place, often covered with a protective membrane, and the gum is closed over it.

03

Healing and new bone growth

Over the following months your body grows new bone into and around the graft material, gradually turning it into firm, living bone that can support an implant.

04

Review and implant placement

At follow-up visits we check your healing and X-ray the site. Once the bone is solid enough, your implant is placed, and your treatment continues towards the final crown, bridge or denture.

Upper jaw

What is a sinus lift?

The upper back teeth sit just below the maxillary sinuses, air spaces behind your cheekbones. When upper molars are lost, the bone there can thin and the sinus floor can drop, leaving only a narrow layer of bone for an implant.

A dental sinus lift gently raises the membrane lining the sinus floor and places graft material underneath it. Once that material has matured into bone, there is enough height to hold an implant in the upper jaw. Some sinus lifts are done at the same time as the implant, while others are completed first with the implant placed after healing.

Recovery is usually similar to other grafting: some swelling and tenderness for a few days, and a short list of precautions such as avoiding blowing your nose forcefully while the area settles.

Recovery and timing

How long after a bone graft can I get an implant?

It depends on the size of the graft and where it is. Small grafts placed at the same time as an implant may add little extra time. Larger grafts, or those built up before placement, usually need several months for the graft to be replaced by your own bone, and occasionally longer.

For the first week or so, swelling, bruising and some discomfort are common. These are usually managed with pain relief your dentist recommends, cold packs and soft foods. Keeping the area clean, avoiding smoking and following your aftercare notes all help the graft take.

We see you for follow-up visits during healing and check the site on X-ray before moving ahead, so the implant only goes in once the bone is ready. Individual healing times vary.

Implant treatments a bone graft can make possible

Grafting is usually a stepping stone rather than the end goal. These are the implant treatments it most often prepares the way for at our Kallangur practice.

Good to know

Bone Grafting - frequently asked

Do I need a bone graft before an implant?

Only if there is not enough healthy bone to hold the implant firmly. Long-standing gaps, gum disease, injury and years of denture wear can all thin the jaw, but many people have plenty of bone and skip grafting entirely. Your X-ray at the free consultation shows which applies to you.

How much does a dental bone graft cost?

The cost depends on the type of graft material, the size of the area and whether it is done with an extraction, a sinus lift or the implant itself. Rather than quote a figure that may not match your case, we provide a written estimate after your free consultation. Payment plans may be available, subject to approval.

How long after a bone graft can I get an implant?

Small grafts can sometimes be placed at the same visit as the implant. Larger grafts usually need a few months to mature into solid bone first, and sometimes longer. We track your healing with check-ups and X-rays and only place the implant when the site is ready.

What is a sinus lift?

A sinus lift adds bone to the upper back jaw by gently raising the floor of the sinus and placing graft material beneath it. It is used when upper molars have been lost and the remaining bone is too shallow for an implant. It can be done before or at the same time as implant placement.

Is bone grafting painful?

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during it. Afterwards it is normal to have some swelling, bruising and tenderness for several days, which is usually managed with recommended pain relief, cold packs and soft foods.

Where does the graft material come from?

Options include bone from your own body, donor bone, bone-derived material from animal sources, or synthetic substitutes. Graft materials supplied in Australia must meet Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) requirements, and your dentist will explain which suits your case.

What are the risks of a bone graft?

Like any surgery, grafting carries risks such as infection, swelling, the graft not taking and, uncommonly, effects on nearby structures. Good oral hygiene and not smoking support healing. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Can implants be placed without a bone graft?

Often they can. If your bone is adequate no graft is needed, and angled-implant approaches such as All-On-4® can sometimes work around bone loss. Your X-ray and examination tell us whether grafting is needed in your case.
