Oral hygiene: your daily routine

Good oral hygiene costs very little and does most of the work of keeping your mouth healthy. Our Kallangur dentists suggest a simple daily routine:

Brushing. Brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste. Use gentle pressure so you do not irritate the gums, and replace your toothbrush every three months or when the bristles splay.

Flossing. Clean between your teeth once a day with floss or interdental brushes. Curve the floss around the base of each tooth and slide it gently under the gum line rather than snapping it down.

Mouthwash. A fluoride mouthwash can add protection, but it supports brushing and flossing rather than replacing them. Ask us which one suits you, especially if you have gum problems.

Diet. Keep sugary and starchy foods and drinks to mealtimes where you can, and drink plenty of plain tap water between meals.

Preventive dentistry at your check-up

Even careful brushing leaves plaque in places a toothbrush cannot reach, and over time it hardens into tartar. At a check-up and clean, your dentist or oral health therapist removes that build-up, polishes the teeth and looks for early decay, gum inflammation, worn fillings and changes in the soft tissues. X-rays are taken when there is a reason to, since decay between teeth is often invisible to the eye.

We see most patients every six months. If your last visit was longer ago than that, now is a good time to book.

Extra protection

Fluoride treatment, fissure sealants and mouthguards

Fluoride treatment. After a clean, a fluoride varnish can be painted onto the teeth to strengthen the enamel and help it resist acid. It takes a few minutes, sets on contact with saliva and is suitable for young children. We usually suggest avoiding food and drink for about 30 minutes afterwards, and waiting a few hours before brushing.

Fissure sealants. The deep grooves on back teeth trap food and bacteria. A fissure sealant fills and seals those grooves, often soon after the adult molars come through.

Mouthguards. A custom mouthguard protects teeth during contact sport, and a night splint can protect them from grinding.

Start early

Preventive care for children

Habits formed early tend to last, and children copy what they see. Brush alongside your child, make it part of the bedtime routine and keep it light rather than a battle. Help with brushing until about age 7 or 8, and start flossing between teeth that touch from the toddler years.

Regular kids check-ups, fluoride and fissure sealants are some of the most effective ways to protect young teeth, and eligible children can have this care bulk billed under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

Whole-body health

How oral health links to general health

Your mouth and the rest of your body are closely connected. High-sugar diets are linked with diabetes and obesity, and with the inflammation behind gum disease. Your dentist may talk with you about diet for your general health as well as your teeth.

Smoking is another concern. It raises the risk of gum disease, dries the mouth so saliva cannot protect the enamel as well, and is linked with mouth and throat cancers. If you would like to quit, ask us for advice and support at your next visit.

Good to know

Preventative Care - frequently asked

What is preventive dentistry?

Preventive dentistry, also called preventative dentistry, is care aimed at stopping tooth decay and gum disease before they start. It includes regular check-ups and professional cleans, fluoride, fissure sealants and sports mouthguards, along with daily brushing, flossing and a tooth-friendly diet at home.

How often should I have a professional clean?

Most people do well with a check-up and professional clean every six months. If you have gum disease, heavy tartar build-up, a dry mouth or a history of decay, your dentist or oral health therapist may suggest visits every three or four months.

Is fluoride treatment safe for kids?

Yes, at the recommended dose fluoride is safe and is one of the most effective ways to prevent decay. The varnish we use is applied in a thin layer and sets quickly, so very little is swallowed. Too much fluoride over years in early childhood can cause faint white marks on the enamel, so your dentist will check your child's overall fluoride intake before recommending treatment.

How should I brush and floss?

Brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste, angling the bristles towards the gum line and using small, gentle circles. Floss or use interdental brushes once a day, curving around each tooth and sliding just under the gum. Spit out the toothpaste afterwards rather than rinsing, so the fluoride keeps working.

Does preventive care save money long term?

Usually, yes. A check-up and clean costs far less than a filling, and a filling costs far less than a root canal or crown. Catching decay and gum disease early means simpler, shorter treatment, and many extras policies include preventive visits in their cover.

Is preventive care covered by health funds?

Most extras policies include check-ups, cleans, fluoride and fissure sealants, and many pay a large share of the fee. We claim your rebate on the spot through HICAPS, and eligible children can be bulk billed under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule. Check your policy for the exact cover.
