Two kinds of stain
What causes teeth discolouration?
Surface (extrinsic) stains build up on the outer enamel. The usual suspects are coffee, tea, red wine, cola, curries and smoking or vaping, along with plaque and tartar that pick up colour over time. These stains respond well to a professional scale and polish and to whitening.
Deep (intrinsic) discolouration comes from inside the tooth. As we get older the enamel wears thinner and the naturally yellower dentine underneath shows through, which is why yellow teeth are so common with age even for people who brush well. Some medications taken while teeth were forming, too much fluoride in childhood, enamel defects, old metal fillings and decay can also change a tooth's colour from within.
Knowing which type you have is the key to choosing the right fix, and it takes a quick examination to tell them apart.
