Do they need to come out?
Do you have to get wisdom teeth removed?
Not always. Wisdom teeth are the last molars to arrive, usually between the late teens and early twenties, and plenty of people keep theirs without trouble. Problems start when the jaw runs out of room and the tooth comes through only part of the way, tilts into the tooth in front, or stays trapped under the gum and bone. That is called an impacted wisdom tooth.
We usually recommend wisdom tooth removal when one of these is happening:
- Ongoing pain or pressure at the back of the jaw
- Repeated gum infections around a half-erupted tooth (pericoronitis)
- Decay in the wisdom tooth, or in the molar next to it, that cannot be repaired
- Crowding that affects other teeth or orthodontic results
- A cyst forming around the tooth
- The tooth getting in the way of a denture or other treatment
If none of these apply, we may simply keep an eye on your wisdom teeth at your regular check-ups.
