Same-Day Crowns
Kallangur

A new crown in one visit

A same-day crown repairs a cracked, broken or heavily filled tooth at Kallangur Dental Surgery, with the tooth prepared and the crown fitted in the same appointment. A consultation beforehand checks the tooth is suitable. Your tooth is scanned digitally, the crown is designed on screen and made while you wait, then bonded in before you head home along Anzac Avenue. It suits busy patients from Kallangur, North Lakes, Mango Hill and the wider Moreton Bay region who would rather not take time off twice.

  • Consultation first, then prepared, scanned, made and fitted in the one appointment
  • No putty impressions and no temporary crown to look after

What it is

What is a same-day crown?

A same-day crown, sometimes called a one-visit crown, is a ceramic cap made chairside with computer-aided design and milling, rather than being sent to an outside laboratory. You may also hear it called a CEREC crown, after one well-known chairside system, but the idea is the same whichever equipment is used: scan, design, make and fit in one sitting.

The finished crown covers the whole visible part of the tooth, holding a weakened tooth together and restoring its shape and colour. Your Kallangur dentist will confirm at your appointment whether same-day treatment suits your tooth.

Why one visit helps

The benefits of same-day dental crowns

  • One trip, not two. A conventional crown means a preparation visit, a wait of a week or two, then a fitting visit. A same-day crown is finished in one appointment, so you only need to be numbed once.
  • Nothing temporary. There is no plastic temporary crown to fall off or feel rough while you wait for the lab.
  • Digital scanning. A small camera records your tooth instead of a tray of impression putty, which many patients find much easier.
  • A close colour match. The crown is shaded on screen to sit naturally beside your own teeth, whether it is a molar or a tooth that shows when you smile.

When a lab crown is better

Same-day crown or a laboratory crown?

Same-day crowns suit most single teeth, but they are not the answer for every case. A crown on a back tooth that takes a very heavy bite, a crown that needs to match a complex front-tooth shade, or a crown joined into a dental bridge may be better made by a dental laboratory. We will explain the choice for your tooth, and you can read more on our dental crowns in Kallangur page.

Looked after well, a same-day crown can last for many years. Brushing, flossing, regular check-ups and a nightguard if you grind your teeth all help it go the distance.

How it works

How a same-day crown is made and fitted

The whole appointment usually runs for a couple of hours. Here is what happens at Kallangur Dental Surgery from start to finish.

01

Check and prepare the tooth

After numbing the area, your dentist removes decay or any cracked sections and shapes the tooth so the crown will sit securely over it.

02

Take a digital scan

An intraoral scanner takes a quick 3D image of the prepared tooth and its neighbours, replacing the traditional impression tray.

03

Design and make the crown

The crown is designed on screen to fit your bite and match your shade, then milled from a solid ceramic block while you relax in the chair.

04

Fit and polish

Your dentist checks the fit and bite, makes any small adjustments, then bonds the crown in place and polishes it. You leave with your finished tooth.

Good to know

Same-Day Crowns - frequently asked

What is a CEREC crown?

CEREC is the brand name of one chairside system for making ceramic crowns in a single visit, and many people use the name for any same-day crown. The process is the same: the tooth is scanned, the crown is designed on a computer and milled from a ceramic block, then bonded in place. Ask us at your appointment about the same-day crowns we provide in Kallangur.

How long does a same-day crown take?

Usually around two hours in total. That covers numbing and preparing the tooth, scanning it, making the crown while you wait, then fitting and polishing it. You go home with the permanent crown already in place. A short consultation beforehand, on another day, checks that the tooth suits a same-day crown.

Are same-day crowns as strong as lab crowns?

Same-day crowns are made from solid ceramic and are strong and hard-wearing for most teeth. For a back tooth under very heavy load, or where a crown needs particular layering for appearance, a laboratory crown may be the better choice. Your dentist will recommend the option that suits your tooth, and individual results vary.

How much does a same-day crown cost?

Same-day crowns at Kallangur Dental Surgery start from $1,900, similar to a conventional crown. The saving is mostly in your time, with one appointment instead of two. You receive a written estimate before treatment starts.

Does health insurance cover same-day crowns?

Crowns fall under major dental on most extras policies, so your fund may pay a rebate depending on your level of cover and waiting periods. We claim it on the spot with HICAPS. Medibank, HCF, Bupa and Westfund are preferred funds, and all other funds are accepted.

How do I look after a same-day crown?

Treat it like your natural teeth: brush twice a day, floss every day and keep up regular check-ups so we can check the crown and the tooth underneath. Avoid biting on ice, pens or bottle tops, and wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth.
