Missing Teeth: Your Options in Kallangur

Missing teeth options, side by side

Missing teeth affect more than your smile. A gap changes how you chew, lets the teeth beside it lean in, and over time the bone underneath shrinks back. The good news is that there is more than one way to fill it. At Kallangur Dental Surgery on Anzac Avenue we look at the gap, the teeth around it and your budget, then lay out each missing tooth replacement option with its cost, timeframe and how long it is likely to last.

TreatmentApproximate cost

These prices are a guide only. Your exact cost is confirmed in writing after we examine the gap and take X-rays, before any treatment begins. In general, a partial denture usually costs least up front, a bridge sits in the middle and an implant costs most up front but may last longest. Your health fund may cover part of the cost, and we claim on the spot through HICAPS.

Why teeth go missing

Missing tooth causes, and why the gap matters

Most of the missing teeth we see in Kallangur trace back to one of a few causes: decay that went too far to save the tooth, advanced gum disease loosening it, a sporting knock or fall, a cracked tooth that could not be repaired, or a tooth that simply never formed. Some people have been living with a gap for years because the extraction happened in a hurry and nobody talked about what came next.

A missing front tooth is usually the one people want fixed first, for obvious reasons. A missing back tooth is easier to ignore, but it often does more damage over time, because the teeth either side tip into the space and the tooth above or below it can drop down. That shifts your bite and creates tight corners where food and plaque collect.

Your options

Ways to replace missing teeth

Each option below replaces a missing tooth in a different way. The right one depends on how many teeth are missing, the health of the teeth nearby, the bone in your jaw and what matters most to you. For implant costs in more detail, see our guide to dental implant costs in Brisbane.

Keep the teeth you have

How to lower your risk of losing more teeth

If you have already lost one tooth, the priority is protecting the rest. The same few habits do most of the work:

  • Clean twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily, especially around any bridge or denture.
  • Keep your six-monthly check-up and clean so gum disease and decay are found while they are small.
  • Wear a custom mouthguard for footy, netball, hockey and other contact sports.
  • Cut back on sugary drinks and snacks between meals, and quit smoking if you can, as it slows gum healing.
  • Get a sore or loose tooth looked at promptly rather than waiting for it to settle.

Missing Teeth - frequently asked

What are my options to replace a missing tooth?

There are four main ways to replace a missing tooth: a dental implant with a crown, a fixed bridge anchored to the neighbouring teeth, a removable partial denture, or, when several teeth are missing, a denture that clips onto implants. At your consultation we explain which of these suit your mouth and why.

Implant, bridge or denture: which suits me?

It depends on the gap and the teeth around it. If the neighbouring teeth are healthy and untouched, an implant avoids drilling them. If they already need crowns, a bridge can make sense. If several teeth are missing or budget is the main concern, a partial denture is often the starting point. Your general health and the amount of jawbone also play a part.

Dental implant vs bridge: what is the difference?

An implant replaces the root as well as the tooth and stands on its own, while a bridge rests on the teeth either side of the gap. Bridges are quicker to complete, but the supporting teeth need to be reshaped. Implants take longer because the bone needs time to heal around the post, and like any surgical procedure they carry risks we will discuss with you.

What happens if I don't replace a missing tooth?

Over time the teeth next to the gap can tilt into it, the opposite tooth can drift down, and the bone where the root used to be slowly shrinks. That can change your bite, make chewing on that side harder and leave awkward spaces that trap food. Replacing a tooth sooner usually keeps the treatment simpler.

How much does it cost to replace a missing tooth?

The cost depends on the option you choose and on what your mouth needs first, such as treating gum disease or a bone graft. A single dental implant with a crown starts from $3,999 and a bridge from $5,000, while a partial denture is quoted at your consultation. We give you a written estimate after your free consultation, before anything is booked in. Health fund rebates may apply, and payment plans can spread the cost.

Can a missing front tooth be replaced quickly?

Often a temporary tooth can be made so you are not left with a visible gap while a permanent option is completed. Whether that is a temporary denture, a bonded tooth or a temporary crown on an implant depends on your case, and we will talk through it at your consultation.
