Cost of dental crowns in Kallangur

TreatmentCost
Dental crown (per tooth)From $1,900
Same-day crown, subject to assessmentFrom $1,900

The dental crown cost for your tooth depends on the material chosen, which tooth is being treated, and whether it first needs root canal treatment or a core build-up. You receive a written estimate before treatment starts. Kallangur Dental Surgery is a preferred provider for Medibank, HCF, Bupa and Westfund, and claims for all other funds can be processed on the spot through HICAPS. Your rebate depends on your level of extras cover.

If a crown is not in this month's budget, there are ways to spread the cost: Buy Now Pay Later for smaller amounts, and payment plans from $2,000-$50,000 with repayment terms from 1-7 years for larger treatment. Approval conditions apply, so ask our front desk what suits you.

The basics

What is a dental crown, and when do you need one?

A crown is a custom cap that sits over the whole visible part of a tooth, from the gum line to the biting surface. Once cemented, it takes the chewing load off weakened tooth structure and gives the tooth a fresh outer surface with a natural shape and colour.

Our dentists usually suggest a crown when a filling alone can no longer hold a tooth together. Common reasons include:

  • A large, ageing filling, especially an old metal one, that leaves thin walls at risk of cracking
  • A cracked or broken tooth that needs to be held together
  • Decay that has spread too far for a standard filling
  • A back tooth after root canal treatment, which tends to become brittle
  • A worn, misshapen or badly discoloured tooth you want to look right again
  • A missing tooth replaced with a dental implant, where the crown becomes the visible new tooth

If you are missing a tooth and the neighbours are sound, a bridge may be the better fit. That treatment has its own page: dental crowns and bridges in Kallangur.

Materials

Types of dental crowns, including porcelain dental crowns

Gold and metal alloy crowns were once the default. Today most of our patients in Kallangur, North Lakes and Mango Hill choose a tooth-coloured option, and the right one depends on where the tooth sits, how much of it is left and how hard you bite.

  • Porcelain dental crowns - layered porcelain closely imitates the translucency of enamel, which makes it a popular choice for teeth that show when you smile.
  • All-ceramic crowns - strong, metal-free ceramics such as zirconia combine a natural look with good resistance to chewing forces, so they suit front and back teeth.
  • Porcelain fused to metal - a metal core with a porcelain outer layer, useful where extra strength is needed under the tooth-coloured surface.
  • Gold and metal alloy crowns - very hard wearing and kind to opposing teeth, often chosen for back molars in people who grind.

Your dentist will talk you through the trade-offs between appearance, strength and cost for your particular tooth before anything is made.

Longevity

How long do dental crowns last?

A crown commonly lasts ten to fifteen years, and many last longer. Lifespan depends on the material, where the crown sits, whether you clench or grind, and above all how well the tooth underneath is kept clean. Individual results vary.

The crown itself cannot decay, but the natural tooth at its edge still can. To look after it:

  • Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth daily, paying attention to the gum line around the crown
  • Keep up regular check-ups and cleans so we can spot early wear or decay at the margin
  • Avoid chewing ice, hard lollies or pens, and never use your teeth to open packets
  • Ask us about a night guard if you grind your teeth, since grinding puts crowns under heavy strain

Your options

Lab-made or same-day: two ways to make your crown

Every crown is custom made for the tooth it covers. What changes is how it is produced and how many visits it takes, and your dentist will recommend the method that suits your tooth.

Laboratory crowns over two visits

Laboratory crowns over two visits

Your tooth is prepared and recorded at the first visit, then a dental laboratory crafts the crown while a temporary one protects it. The permanent crown is fitted at a second appointment.

  • Widest choice of materials, from porcelain to gold
  • Suited to complex teeth and heavy bites
  • Temporary crown worn in between
  • From $1,900 per tooth
Same-day crowns

Same-day crowns

For some teeth, a ceramic crown may be designed, milled and fitted in a single appointment. Whether this is suitable depends on your tooth and is confirmed at your assessment.

  • May be available, subject to assessment
  • Digital scan instead of impression putty
  • Tooth-coloured ceramic

How it works

How is a dental crown fitted?

A standard laboratory crown takes two appointments at our Anzac Avenue practice. This is what happens at each stage.

01

Assessment and planning

We examine the tooth, take X-rays where needed and check whether a crown is the most conservative fix. You receive a treatment plan and a written estimate so the cost is clear before you commit.

Book now →
02

Preparing the tooth

After numbing the area, your dentist removes decay and any weak or old filling material, then shapes the tooth so the crown can sit over it. Where a lot of tooth is missing, a core build-up is placed first to support the crown.

03

Impressions and making your crown

We record the prepared tooth and choose a shade that blends with your neighbouring teeth. A temporary crown protects the tooth while a dental laboratory makes the permanent one. If a same-day crown suits your tooth, this wait may not be needed.

04

Fitting and bite check

At your second visit we remove the temporary, try in the new crown and check how it meets your other teeth when you chew. Once you and your dentist are happy with the fit and look, it is cemented in place.

Good to know

Dental Crowns - frequently asked

How much does a dental crown cost?

At Kallangur Dental Surgery a dental crown starts from $1,900 per tooth. The final cost depends on the material, the tooth involved and any work it needs first, such as a build-up or root canal treatment. We give you a written estimate before treatment begins.

How long do dental crowns last?

Many crowns last ten to fifteen years, and some go on much longer. Good brushing and flossing, regular check-ups and protecting your teeth from grinding all help, while decay at the edge of the crown is the most common reason one needs replacing.

What types of dental crowns are there?

The main types are porcelain, all-ceramic such as zirconia, porcelain fused to metal, and gold or other metal alloys. Tooth-coloured options suit visible teeth, while metal and zirconia are often chosen for back teeth that take heavy chewing forces.

How is a dental crown fitted?

The tooth is numbed and shaped, a record of it is taken and a temporary crown goes on. At a second visit the permanent crown is tried in, adjusted for your bite and cemented. Where a same-day crown suits the tooth, it may be done in one appointment.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth usually do. A tooth that has had root canal treatment is often left hollowed out and more brittle, and a crown helps stop it from splitting under chewing pressure. Front teeth sometimes manage with a filling, and your dentist will advise on your tooth.

Will my health fund cover a crown?

Crowns are usually claimed under major dental on extras cover, so your rebate depends on your policy. We are a preferred provider for Medibank, HCF, Bupa and Westfund, and we can claim for other funds through HICAPS at the front desk.

Is getting a crown painful?

The tooth is numbed before it is prepared, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some tenderness or sensitivity for a few days afterwards is normal and generally settles on its own. If you feel nervous about dental visits, let us know and we can talk about ways to help you stay comfortable.

What are the alternatives to a crown?

If enough healthy tooth remains, an inlay or onlay can rebuild part of it while keeping more of your natural structure. Veneers can address cosmetic concerns on front teeth, and a tooth that cannot be saved may be replaced with an implant. We will recommend the least invasive option that will last.

My crown is loose or damaged. Can it be fixed?

Often, yes. A loose crown can sometimes be cleaned and re-cemented, while a chipped or worn-out crown may need replacing. Call us as soon as you can and keep the crown if it has come off.

I have small or oddly shaped teeth. Can a crown help?

It can. A crown can be made in a different shape and size from the original tooth, within what your bite allows, which helps even out teeth that look small or irregular.
