Why it matters
Why a regular dentist check up and clean pays off
Brushing twice a day and flossing does most of the work, but even careful brushers leave plaque behind in a few places: behind the lower front teeth, around the back molars and just under the gum line. Over a few months that plaque hardens into tartar (calculus), which only a dental clean can remove. Left in place, it irritates the gums, makes them bleed and gives decay a foothold.
That is why we advise a dental check-up twice a year for most people. At each visit we look for the early signs of trouble, such as a softening spot on a molar, a filling that has started to leak or gums that have pulled back, while they are still simple and inexpensive to manage. If you have gingivitis, a history of several cavities or ongoing dental work, we may suggest you come in a little more often and will tell you why.
