Free dental for kids: the Child Dental Benefits Schedule

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is an Australian Government program, paid through Medicare, that covers basic dental care for eligible children and teenagers aged 0 to 17. Each eligible child can receive up to $1,158 in benefits over two consecutive calendar years. Kallangur Dental Surgery accepts the CDBS and bulk bills eligible children, which means covered treatment costs you nothing out of pocket.

Is my child eligible for CDBS? Generally, a child is eligible if they are aged 0 to 17 for at least one day of the calendar year, are eligible for Medicare, and the family (or the child) receives a qualifying government payment such as Family Tax Benefit Part A at some point in that year. Services Australia usually writes to families to let them know. If you are not sure, our reception team can check your child's remaining balance when you call.

What the CDBS covers:

  • Check-ups and examinations
  • Scale and clean
  • X-rays
  • Fluoride and fissure sealants
  • Fillings
  • Root canal treatment
  • Tooth extractions
  • Partial dentures

The scheme does not cover orthodontics such as braces, cosmetic treatment or any dental care done in hospital. We always tell you before treatment if anything falls outside the CDBS, so there are no surprises.

Why baby teeth matter

Children's dentistry starts with milk teeth

It is easy to think milk teeth do not matter because they fall out. In fact they hold the space for the adult teeth growing underneath, help children learn to speak clearly and let them chew food properly, which matters for nutrition. When a baby tooth is lost early to decay, nearby teeth can drift into the gap and the adult tooth may come through crowded or out of place.

Children's dentistry is about spotting and treating problems such as tooth decay, gum disease and knocks to the mouth early, and about building habits that last. We suggest parents help with brushing until children are about 7 or 8, when most have the coordination to do a thorough job on their own.

Nervous kids

A gentle kids dentist for anxious children

Some children are wary of the dentist, and a rushed first experience can stay with them for years. Our team takes things at your child's pace: we show them the chair and the tools, explain what each one does in simple words and only start once they feel settled. Where a child needs more help, we talk with you about options, which may include sleep dentistry for more involved treatment after a clinical and medical assessment.

Dr Sonia, our principal dentist, has a particular interest in helping anxious patients feel at ease, and that approach carries through the whole team.

Treatments for children

Dental treatments we offer for kids

From toddlers to teenagers, our Kallangur dentists provide check-ups and cleans, fluoride treatment, fissure sealants, tooth-coloured fillings, treatment for knocked or chipped teeth, and sports mouthguards for kids who play footy, netball or hockey. We also keep an eye on how the adult teeth are coming through and can talk with you about orthodontic options such as Invisalign for older children and teens when the time is right.

How it works

What happens at your child's check-up

Whether it is their first dental visit or their tenth, each appointment follows the same calm routine at our Kallangur practice, and parents are welcome in the room.

01

Hello and settling in

We greet your child by name, let them look around and sit in the chair, and answer any questions from you or them before we begin.

02

Checking teeth and gums

The dentist counts and checks each tooth, looks at the gums, jaw and bite, and watches for early signs of decay. Depending on age and risk, a low-dose X-ray may be suggested to check the adult teeth developing underneath.

03

A gentle clean

Any plaque or tartar is removed and the teeth are polished. We may apply fluoride to strengthen the enamel, and show your child how to brush the tricky spots.

04

Tips and the next visit

We share practical advice on brushing, snacks and drinks, explain any treatment we recommend and what the CDBS or your health fund covers, and book the next check-up, usually in six months.

Good to know

Kids Dentistry - frequently asked

Do you bulk bill under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?

Yes. Kallangur Dental Surgery accepts the CDBS and bulk bills eligible children, so treatment covered by the scheme has no out-of-pocket cost. Bring your child's Medicare card to the appointment, and we will let you know before treatment if anything is not covered.

Is my child eligible for CDBS?

Children aged 0 to 17 who are eligible for Medicare usually qualify if the family receives a payment such as Family Tax Benefit Part A during the calendar year, and each eligible child can use up to $1,158 in benefits over two calendar years. Services Australia normally sends a letter confirming eligibility. You can also check through your Medicare online account, or call us and we will look it up for you.

When should my child first see a dentist?

We recommend a first visit when the first tooth appears, or by your child's first birthday, whichever comes first. Early visits are mostly about getting used to the dentist and giving parents advice, and they help us catch any problems while they are small.

How often should kids see the dentist?

For most children, a check-up and clean every six months works well. Children who are prone to decay, or who are having treatment, may need to come in more often. Your dentist will suggest a schedule that suits your child.

What if my child is scared of the dentist?

Let us know when you book. We take extra time, explain everything in simple terms and let your child set the pace. For children who need more involved treatment and cannot manage in the chair, we can discuss other comfort options, including sleep dentistry, after an assessment.

When will my child's milk teeth fall out?

The front baby teeth usually loosen at around 6 to 8 years of age, and the rest are generally replaced between 10 and 12. If teeth are falling out much earlier or later than this, book a check-up so the dentist can see whether the adult teeth are developing normally.

Is the check-up process hygienic?

Yes. Every instrument is cleaned and sterilised between patients, and our infection control follows Australian dental standards before, during and after each appointment.
