The basics

What are complete dentures?

A complete denture, also called a full denture, replaces all of the teeth in one arch. The teeth sit in an acrylic base tinted to look like gum, and the base rests on the ridge where your teeth used to be. An upper denture covers the roof of the mouth and holds by suction. A lower denture sits on a narrower ridge and relies more on the muscles of the tongue and cheeks, which is why lowers can take longer to get used to.

Full dentures are not only for older patients. People lose teeth to gum disease, decay or injury at many stages of life, and a well-made set can restore the way you look, eat and speak at any age.

Everyday life

Will full dentures affect how I eat and speak?

For the first few weeks, yes, a little. New dentures can feel bulky, you may produce more saliva and a few sounds (especially "s" and "f") can come out differently. Reading aloud and practising in conversation helps your tongue and lips adapt quickly.

For eating, start with soft food cut into small pieces and chew on both sides at once to keep the denture balanced. Most people move back to a normal diet over time, though very hard or sticky foods can still be a challenge. If sore spots appear, come back in and we will ease them, which is part of the fitting process.

What full dentures can give you back:

  • A complete smile and support for your lips and cheeks
  • The ability to chew a wider range of food
  • Clearer speech once you are used to them
  • A tooth replacement that needs no surgery

Looking after them

How do I care for full dentures?

Take your dentures out after meals and rinse them, then brush them once a day with a soft brush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner rather than toothpaste. Clean them over a folded towel or a sink of water so they do not crack if dropped. Most people leave them out overnight in water or a soaking solution, which gives the gums a rest. Brush your gums and tongue gently too.

Your mouth keeps changing after teeth are lost, so a denture that fitted well can gradually become loose. Rather than relying on more adhesive, book in. A reline reshapes the fitting surface to your gums, and we can also repair cracked or broken dentures. Regular check-ups let us tell you when a new set makes more sense than another adjustment.

How it works

Immediate dentures and how long full dentures take

Conventional full dentures are made once your gums have healed after extractions, which usually takes a few appointments over several weeks. If you would rather not go without teeth while you heal, immediate dentures are made before the extractions and fitted on the same day. The immediate denture process looks like this:

01

Records and impressions

Before any teeth come out, we take impressions and bite records and choose the shade and shape of your new teeth.

02

Extractions and same-day fit

The remaining teeth are removed and the denture is placed straight away, which also helps protect the healing sockets.

03

Early review

We see you again within the first week to check healing and ease any pressure points.

04

Adjusting and relining

Your gums shrink as they heal, so the denture is adjusted over the next few months and relined once the ridge has settled, keeping it snug and comfortable.

Good to know

Full Dentures - frequently asked

What is a full denture?

A full denture replaces every tooth in the upper or lower jaw. It is removable, sits on your gums and is custom-made from impressions of your mouth so the teeth suit your face and bite.

How much does a full set of dentures cost?

The cost depends on whether you need one arch or both, the materials, and any extractions or preparation beforehand. Immediate dentures also need extra adjustment visits. We give you a written estimate after your consultation so you know your cost before treatment begins.

How long does it take to get full dentures?

Conventional dentures usually take several appointments over a few weeks: impressions, bite records, a try-in and the final fit. If teeth need removing, you can either wait for the gums to heal first or have an immediate denture fitted the same day as your extractions.

Are full dentures and complete dentures the same thing?

Yes. Both names describe a denture that replaces all the teeth in one arch. A partial denture is the version for when some of your own teeth remain.

Should I have full dentures or keep some of my teeth?

If your remaining teeth are healthy and well supported, keeping them and wearing a partial is often the better choice, as natural teeth help hold a denture steady. If the teeth left are badly decayed, loose from gum disease or causing pain, a complete denture may be more comfortable and predictable. Your dentist will go through this with you.

What are full dentures made from?

The base is a strong acrylic resin coloured to look like gum, and the teeth are acrylic or composite shaped and shaded to look natural. Some lowers are made to fit onto implants for extra stability.

What do new full dentures feel like at first?

Expect them to feel large and unfamiliar for a while. Some people notice extra saliva, mild soreness or a slight gag reflex at first. These feelings usually settle as your mouth adapts, and we will adjust anything that rubs.
