When to book

When should my child first see a dentist?

The usual advice is by the first birthday, or within about six months of the first tooth appearing. Baby teeth can decay soon after they come through, especially with night bottles or frequent snacks, and early visits let our kids dentist team spot problems while they are small. Just as important, a toddler who meets the dentist while nothing is wrong is far more relaxed later on.

Families come to us on Anzac Avenue from across Kallangur, Petrie, Mango Hill, Murrumba Downs, Dakabin and North Lakes, and there is parking at the back of the building, which helps when you are juggling a pram.

Getting ready

How to prepare your toddler for the dentist

  • Timing: book when your child is usually rested and fed, not close to nap time.
  • Words: keep it light and positive. "The dentist is going to count your teeth" works better than "it won't hurt".
  • Practice: play dentist at home. Take turns counting teeth with a spoon, or check a teddy's teeth.
  • Stories: a picture book or short video about visiting the dentist makes it familiar.
  • Comfort: bring a favourite toy or blanket, and arrive a few minutes early so nobody is rushed.
  • You: children pick up on how we feel. If dental visits make you anxious, let us know quietly and we will lead.

At home

Looking after little teeth between visits

  • Brushing: start as soon as the first tooth appears, twice a day, with a soft child-sized brush. Use water only until 18 months unless your dentist says otherwise, then a small pea-sized smear of low-fluoride children's toothpaste.
  • Flossing: once two teeth touch, usually from about two or three years old.
  • Drinks: water and milk are the teeth-friendly choices. Avoid putting a baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.
  • Snacks: keep sweet foods to mealtimes rather than grazing through the day.
  • Habits: gently wind back dummies and thumb sucking by about age four to help the bite develop well.

Later, when the adult back teeth arrive at about six, we may suggest fissure sealants to protect their deep grooves.

CDBS bulk billing

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is a Medicare program that helps eligible children aged 0 to 17 with basic dental care, including check-ups and cleans, X-rays, fillings and extractions. Eligibility usually depends on the family receiving certain government payments, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A.

At Kallangur Dental Surgery, dentistry for eligible children can be bulk billed under the CDBS. Ask our team and we will check your child's eligibility and balance for you.

How it works

What happens at a child's first dental visit

Most first visits take 15 to 30 minutes, and everything moves at your child's speed.

01

Say hello

We introduce ourselves, let your child look at the chair, the light and the mirror, and explain things in simple words.

02

Count the teeth

Younger babies often stay on your lap. The dentist looks at the teeth, gums and bite, checking for early decay and how teeth are coming through.

03

A little polish, if they want one

Older toddlers who are happy in the chair may have a gentle polish. If not, that can wait for next time.

04

Tips and your questions

We show you how to brush at their age, how much toothpaste to use and which snacks are kindest to teeth, and answer anything from dummies to teething.

Good to know

Child's First Dental Visit - frequently asked

When should my child first see a dentist?

Aim for your child's first dental visit by their first birthday, or within about six months of the first tooth coming through, whichever is sooner. It sounds early, but at this age the visit is mostly about getting familiar with the dentist and checking that teeth are coming through as expected. Early visits also give you a chance to ask about teething, bottles and brushing.

What happens at a child's first dental visit?

Your child usually sits on your lap or in the chair while the dentist has a gentle look at their teeth and gums, checking for early signs of decay and how the teeth are developing. If they are comfortable, we may polish a few teeth. We then show you how to brush for their age and answer your questions. Nothing is forced, and a visit where your child simply meets us and has a ride in the chair still counts.

How do I prepare my toddler for the dentist?

Keep the talk simple and positive, for example that the dentist will count their teeth and help keep them strong. Read a picture book about going to the dentist, play dentist at home with a teddy, and book a time of day when your toddler is usually happy. Try not to pass on your own worries, and avoid words like hurt or needle.

Is the first visit covered by CDBS?

It may be. The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is a Medicare program for eligible children aged 0 to 17, usually in families receiving certain government payments such as Family Tax Benefit Part A. For eligible children, check-ups can be bulk billed at our Kallangur practice. Our team can check your child's eligibility and remaining balance before the appointment.

How long does the first appointment take?

Usually around 15 to 30 minutes. We keep first visits short so they end while your child is still happy, which makes the next visit easier.

What if my child cries or will not open their mouth?

That is very common, and it is fine. We never hold a child down or rush them. Sometimes a first visit is just a look around and a chat, and we try again next time. Each calm visit builds trust.

How often should my child see the dentist after that?

For most children, a check-up every six months lets us keep an eye on new teeth, spot small cavities early and see how the bite is developing. We will suggest a schedule to suit your child.

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed. You can book your child's first visit online or by calling (07) 3886 0933.

What if my toddler hurts a tooth before the first visit?

Toddlers fall over. If your child knocks, chips or loses a tooth, or has a toothache or swelling, call us on (07) 3886 0933 during opening hours and we will fit them in as soon as we can. For a knocked-out baby tooth, do not try to put it back. Our emergency dentist page has more first-aid steps.

Will you check how my child's teeth are lining up?

Yes. At every check-up we look at how your child's jaw and teeth are lining up. If crowding or a bite problem starts to show, we explain what we see and when, if ever, treatment is worth considering.
