Clear Aligners in Kallangur 2025: Invisalign vs SmileDirectClub (Comparison Guide) at Kallangur Dental Surgery

Australians searching for clear aligners in Kallangur still come across two names more than any others: Invisalign and SmileDirectClub. Both promised straighter teeth without brackets and wires, but they worked in very different ways. One is prescribed and supervised by a dentist or orthodontist who examines you in person. The other sent aligners by mail with remote check-ins, and it has since shut down. This guide explains how each model worked, what changed when SmileDirectClub closed, and what clear aligners cost at Kallangur Dental Surgery, so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

The 2025 Landscape for Clear Aligners Down Under

Demand for removable, nearly invisible aligners keeps growing as adults and teenagers look for an alternative to fixed braces. Dentist-supervised aligner systems, Invisalign among them, are offered by general dentists and orthodontists across the country. At-home brands sell aligners online with little or no face-to-face care.

SmileDirectClub was the most widely advertised of the at-home brands until late 2023, when it collapsed and left many Australian customers part-way through treatment. Other mail-order brands still operate, but the closure was a reminder of the risks of treatment that does not include an in-person examination. Australian dental and orthodontic bodies have long advised that the teeth, gums and bone are checked in person, with X-rays where needed, before any tooth movement starts, because problems such as gum disease or untreated decay can make orthodontic treatment unsafe.

How Invisalign Kallangur Works

Invisalign is made by Align Technology and is prescribed by dentists and orthodontists. Dentist-supervised clear aligner treatment generally follows the same steps:

  1. Examination. Your dentist checks your teeth, gums and bite, and takes X-rays if needed, to confirm aligners are suitable and that any decay or gum problems are treated first.
  2. Digital scan and plan. A 3D scan of your teeth is used to plan each stage of movement on screen, so you can see the intended result before you start.
  3. Aligners and attachments. Your trays are made to that plan. Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments may be bonded to some teeth so the trays can grip and move them. Some cases also need a little enamel polished from between the teeth to make space.
  4. Reviews. You change trays every week or two and come in for reviews every few weeks, so your dentist can check the teeth are tracking and order refinement trays if they are not.
  5. Retention. When the movement is finished, a retainer holds the teeth in their new position.

Treatment for mild to moderate crowding commonly takes around 6 to 18 months. The aligners come out for meals and brushing and are worn for 20 to 22 hours a day. Because a dentist sees you throughout, problems such as a tooth that is not moving as planned can be picked up early.

At Kallangur Dental Surgery, clear aligner treatment starts from $4,500. Simpler cases sit at the lower end, and cases that need more aligners or refinements cost more. You receive a written, itemised quote after a free smile consultation, booked with a $75 deposit that is refunded at your appointment or if you cancel with 48 hours' notice. Fees vary between practices, so if you compare quotes, check what each one includes: scans, refinements, reviews and retainers can all be extra. Some health funds with orthodontic extras cover part of the cost, which we can claim on the spot through HICAPS, and payment plans may be available to spread the rest.

What Happened to SmileDirectClub Kallangur?

SmileDirectClub sold aligners directly to consumers. Customers either took their own impressions with a home kit or had a 3D scan at one of its SmileShops, and progress was then checked remotely through photos rather than in-person examinations. Its appeal was convenience and a price well below most in-clinic treatment.

In September 2023 the parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States, and in December 2023 it announced it was shutting down worldwide. Australian customers lost access to the company's support, aligner orders, retainers and aftercare. SmileDirectClub no longer operates, so anyone who was part-way through treatment, or who needs a new retainer, has to see another provider.

If you are a former SmileDirectClub customer, a check-up is a sensible first step. A dentist can see whether your teeth have moved since treatment stopped, check your gums and bite, make a new retainer if you need one, and talk through whether further aligner treatment would help.

Which Option Should Patients Choose in 2025?

Dentist-supervised clear aligners cost more up front than mail-order kits, but the fee covers an examination before treatment, a plan made by a dentist who has seen your teeth, regular reviews, and someone to call if a tray cracks or a tooth stops tracking. Results still vary from person to person, and they depend on wearing the trays as directed.

If budget is your main concern, ask about payment plans and health fund cover before ruling in-clinic treatment out. If you are still weighing up an at-home brand, ask who examines you before treatment, who checks your progress, what happens if teeth do not move as planned, and who will support you if the company closes. Given what happened to SmileDirectClub, those questions matter.

Professional Advice Matters

Demand for clear aligners in Kallangur and across Brisbane's north keeps growing, and the options can be hard to compare. The right choice comes down to your teeth, your bite and your goals, and that needs an examination rather than an online quiz.
