How CDBS works
What is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule, usually shortened to CDBS, is an Australian Government program run through Medicare. It pays for basic dental services for eligible children and teenagers, up to a set benefit amount spread over two consecutive calendar years. Services Australia sets that cap and publishes the current figure.
Eligibility is decided by the government, not by the dental surgery. In general, a child aged 0 to 17 is eligible for a calendar year if they are eligible for Medicare and the family receives Family Tax Benefit Part A, or certain other government payments, at some point in that year. Families who qualify are usually told by letter, and you can also check through your Medicare online account.
When a clinic bulk bills under CDBS, it claims the benefit directly from Medicare and you have no gap to pay for the covered services, as long as there is benefit left in your child's two-year balance.
